Kurze, ruhige Notizen für die zweite Lebenshälfte. Das Journal erscheint auf Englisch und zitiert die englischen Ausgaben.
- Begin your second curve while the first is still going well. Waiting turns a graceful change of course into an emergency. Most people wait until a skill or role feels stale before looking ahead, but by then you're scrambling from weakness instead of strength. This week, spend 15 minutes listing one thing you'd like to learn or shift toward—not because something's broken, but because you're curious.
- You don't think your way into a new self-image. You act your way in — one delegated task, one declined meeting at a time.Your self-image shifts through small choices that compound over time, not through thinking alone. This week, decline one thing that doesn't align with who you're becoming, and notice how that single boundary starts to reshape how you see yourself.
- A thing depreciates; a memory compounds. Spend on experiences you'll replay for years, not objects that fade. The richness of a memory comes from how often you revisit it—with friends, in quiet moments, or just mentally replaying the details. This week, skip one planned purchase and instead spend that money on something you'll actually talk about later.
- Name your "enough" number. Most people never do — so no amount ever feels like enough. The trouble is that ambition without a ceiling becomes a treadmill — you hit each target and immediately see the next one. Try writing down a specific number that would let you stop striving and start living, then sit with it for a week before deciding if it's real.
- Financial freedom isn't being rich. It's working because you want to, not because you have to.Most people chase a number they think will fix everything, but real freedom arrives earlier—when your choices stop being ruled by bills. Start by tracking one month of spending to see where your money actually goes, not where you think it does.
- The urgent is loud; the important is quiet. So the important waits — unless you protect it on purpose, in advance. Most days, emergencies masquerade as priorities—a message, a meeting, someone else's deadline—and the quiet things that actually matter get squeezed out. The fix isn't willpower; it's a single calendar block each week labeled "protected" where nothing else can land.
- You don't have to be everywhere. Stepping back from a meeting can be the most focused thing you do all week. When you're not in a room, you can actually think about what matters most instead of reacting to what's loudest. Pick one recurring meeting this week and skip it—notice what you accomplish in that freed-up hour.
- Second Curve: this week's signals (Sep 22)A short roundup of the Second Curve links worth your time this week — each with a quick take.
- A not-to-do list beats a to-do list. One only adds; the other gives you back your week. Most people's calendars get packed because they never actually say no—they just keep saying yes. Start by identifying three things you're doing out of habit or obligation rather than real purpose, then stop one this week.
- Multitasking is just fast switching, and every switch leaves a residue. One thing at a time isn't slower. It's sharper. When you switch tasks, part of your attention stays stuck on the last one—psychologists call it attention residue, as *Not the Epilogue* reports—and simple things start to feel hard. Try protecting one hour tomorrow for a single project, and notice the difference.
- Work expands to fill the time you give it. Cap the container, and the value usually holds — only the stress leaves. When you set a real deadline, your mind stops spinning and starts prioritizing. Try picking one project this week and giving yourself a specific end time—not to rush through it, but to notice what actually matters.
- Roughly a fifth of your effort drives most of your results. Find that fifth, protect it, and shrink the rest. Most people spread themselves thin across activities that barely matter while neglecting the few that compound. Start this week by tracking where you actually spend time versus where you see real progress, then cut one thing that doesn't belong on that list.
- Making the wrong thing faster still leaves you doing the wrong thing. Cut it, and you get your afternoon back. Most people assume speed solves their problems, but a task that shouldn't exist wastes time no matter how efficiently you do it. Pick one thing this week you suspect doesn't actually matter, ask yourself what breaks if you stop, then try stopping it.
- Meddling spends your experience one problem at a time. Mentoring invests it, so it keeps paying out for years. When you help someone solve today's problem, they're back tomorrow with a new one. When you teach them how to think through problems themselves, you've given them something that compounds over time. Pick one person this week and ask them what they'd do first instead of telling them.
- "Good job" proves you needed something to say. Specific praise proves you actually noticed — that's the whole point. When you name what someone did well—the extra ten minutes they spent organizing the files, the tone they used to calm a frustrated customer—they know you were actually paying attention. Try this week: before you praise anyone, pause and think of one specific thing first.
- In a heated moment, one breath hands control back from your brain's alarm to its reasoning. Pause before you speak. When you feel anger rising, the brain's alarm takes the wheel and, on the usual explanation *Not the Epilogue* gives, pushes aside the prefrontal cortex—the part that reasons. A single conscious breath gives that reasoning part time to catch up, which means your next words come from choice rather than reaction.
- Every automatic yes is a no to something you never chose — usually the deep work, the rest, or the people who matter most. When you say yes to everything, you're operating on other people's schedules instead of your own. Try this week: before saying yes to one new thing, name what you'd have to sacrifice—then decide if that trade is actually worth it.
- Hear the need behind the words. "Too many meetings" often means no time is left for the work that matters. When someone complains about meetings, they're usually signaling that their schedule leaves no room for the work they find meaningful. Next time you hear this, ask what that person would do with an extra two hours weekly—their answer tells you what matters most to them.
- Do one thing, fully. Finishing is a feeling your scattered days quietly stopped giving you.Completion gives you something fragmentation can't—it's the difference between reading five articles and finishing one book. Pick one small task tomorrow, see it through to done, and notice how that lands differently than your usual day.
- Ask of each app: does an alert from this really need to interrupt your life? For nearly all of them, the honest answer is no.Most notifications are designed to grab your attention, not to serve you. Pick one app this week, turn off its alerts, and notice what you actually miss—usually nothing.
- Recovery isn't the reward you earn after the work. It's part of the work — the part that keeps the rest of it good. Most people treat rest like something to squeeze in after they've exhausted themselves, but that backward order is what breaks the system. Try this week: pick one thing you do daily and build ten minutes of genuine rest around it—before, during, or after—and notice how the quality of that thing shifts.
- It was never discipline carrying you. It was energy — and energy is made in your body, not your calendar. When the willpower runs out, the usual verdict is a character flaw. More often the tank is simply empty: energy is built on sleep, movement and food. Pick one this week and give it a floor: in bed 30 minutes earlier, a 20-minute walk, or one clean meal a day.
- Three slow breaths before you walk into a meeting. Small enough to feel silly — and you can try it today.Three slow breaths are a small signal to slow down before you've even opened the door. Try it once when you're about to do something that matters, and notice how you show up.
- Busy is not the same as effective. The faster you run, the less you actually steer. Most people confuse motion with progress—they optimize speed while losing sight of direction. Pick one thing this week that matters most to you, and give it your full attention for just thirty minutes before moving to the next task.
- Calm isn't a temperament you're born with. It's a skill: the half-second of space between a trigger and your reaction. That half-second is where your power lives—it's the moment you notice your jaw tightening or your chest rising, before you say something you'll regret. Try this: next time you feel heat coming, name it silently (anger, fear, embarrassment) and take one slow breath before you move or speak.
- Purpose isn't buried treasure you dig up. It's a direction you face — and you mostly discover it by moving. Most people wait for clarity before they act, but clarity usually comes from doing something small and seeing what it teaches you. Pick one thing this week that aligns with what matters to you—not perfectly, just roughly—and notice what happens next.
- A strong enough "why" makes almost any "how" bearable. Get clear on the why behind what you already do.Most people skip this step and wonder why their efforts feel hollow. Spend fifteen minutes this week writing down the actual reason you do what you do—not what sounds good, but what's true—and notice how differently you show up tomorrow.
- Status is a firework: bright, loud, gone. Impact is a campfire: quieter, warmer, and it lasts through the night.People chase the applause of a moment when they could be building something steady that actually changes how others see themselves. Start small—pick one person this week and show up consistently for them, not because anyone's watching.
- You don't have to climb down the ladder. You just have to move it to a better wall.Sometimes the best move isn't pushing harder at what you're doing—it's asking if you're even climbing toward something that matters to you. Start by naming one thing you'd rather be working on, then take one small step toward it this week.
- Sort your tasks by two questions: does this give energy, and does it matter? What drains you and means little — drop it, without guilt. Most of us inherit obligations that stopped serving us years ago—the committee work, the favor we keep repeating, the relationship we maintain out of habit. This week, pick one small thing you've been doing automatically and ask yourself honestly: does this refill you or empty you? If it's the latter and it's not truly essential, step back.
- That quiet "was that it?" isn't a crisis. It's your own life asking you to choose again. When the novelty wears off and you're left with ordinary Tuesday mornings, that's not emptiness—it's permission to build something that actually fits your life instead of chasing someone else's definition of fullness. Start by writing down three small things you genuinely want to do this week, not things you think you should want.
- Begin your second curve while the first is still going well. Waiting turns a graceful change of course into an emergency. The gap between recognizing change is necessary and acting on it grows wider the longer you wait—by then, circumstance forces your hand instead of you directing it. This week, identify one small thing you've been thinking about starting: take just one concrete step toward it before the pressure mounts.
- You don't think your way into a new self-image. You act your way in — one delegated task, one declined meeting at a time.Your identity shifts when you stop waiting to feel ready and start making small choices that align with who you want to become. This week, say no to one thing that doesn't serve you and yes to one task that moves you forward—that's how real change takes root.
- A thing depreciates; a memory compounds. Spend on experiences you'll replay for years, not objects that fade. The best purchases aren't things—they're the stories you tell yourself about what you did. Next time you're about to buy something, ask whether you will still think about this in five years.
- Name your "enough" number. Most people never do — so no amount ever feels like enough.Without a clear target, you treat money like a treadmill—faster and faster but never arriving. Try this week: write down a specific number that would genuinely let you relax, then notice what comes up when you imagine actually stopping there.
- Financial freedom isn't being rich. It's working because you want to, not because you have to.Most people chase a number when they should be chasing optionality—the ability to say no to work that drains them. Start by tracking one month of your actual spending so you know what "enough" really costs you.
- The urgent is loud; the important is quiet. So the important waits — unless you protect it on purpose, in advance. When you wait to protect what matters most, the noise around you decides your day instead. Pick one important thing this week—a relationship, a project, a health habit—and block time for it before anything else claims that space.
- You don't have to be everywhere. Stepping back from a meeting can be the most focused thing you do all week. When you skip something, you're not avoiding responsibility—you're choosing what actually matters. Try declining one meeting this week and notice what you accomplish with those reclaimed minutes.
- A not-to-do list beats a to-do list. One only adds; the other gives you back your week. Most of what we say yes to isn't a real choice—it's habit or obligation. A not-to-do list forces you to name what you're actually willing to stop, which is harder but more honest than another productivity hack. This week, pick one recurring task that doesn't align with what matters to you and actually remove it.
- Multitasking is just fast switching, and every switch leaves a residue. One thing at a time isn't slower. It's sharper. When you switch tasks, part of your attention stays stuck on the previous one—what psychologists call attention residue—diluting attention on what's now in front of you. Tomorrow, try protecting just one hour where you close notifications and tend to a single project, then notice what clarity feels like.
- Work expands to fill the time you give it. Cap the container, and the value usually holds — only the stress leaves. When you stop treating your day like an infinite container, tasks naturally become more focused because the pressure to fill every hour disappears. Try setting a hard stop time for one project this week—not to rush, but to notice what actually matters when time has edges.
- Roughly a fifth of your effort drives most of your results. Find that fifth, protect it, and shrink the rest. Most people scatter their attention across dozens of things and wonder why they're exhausted. The real move is auditing what actually moves the needle—then saying no to nearly everything else so you can actually do that fifth well.
- Making the wrong thing faster still leaves you doing the wrong thing. Cut it, and you get your afternoon back. Most people optimize what they're already doing instead of questioning whether it should exist at all. Start today by listing three things you do regularly, then ask honestly whether you would start it now if you weren't already doing it.
- Meddling spends your experience one problem at a time. Mentoring invests it, so it keeps paying out for years. When you solve someone's problem directly, they're dependent on you next time. But when you teach them to solve it themselves, you've built something that compounds over time. This week, pick one thing someone asked you to do and instead show them how you'd approach it.
- "Good job" proves you needed something to say. Specific praise proves you actually noticed — that's the whole point. When you tell someone exactly what they did well — the specific action or choice — you're telling them you were paying attention. That detail lands differently than a generic compliment because it's harder to give, which makes it real. Next time you praise someone, pause and name one concrete thing before you speak.
- In a heated moment, one breath hands control back from your brain's alarm to its reasoning. Pause before you speak. When you feel anger rising, the alarm takes over your judgment—a single breath gives your reasoning time to catch up. Try this: next time you're about to respond harshly, count to three before speaking, and notice if your words change.
- Every automatic yes is a no to something you never chose — usually the deep work, the rest, or the people who matter most. When you default to yes without thinking, you're not being generous—you're being unavailable to what actually matters to you. Try this week: pause for three seconds before answering any request, and notice what you're protecting by saying no.
- Hear the need behind the words. "Too many meetings" often means there's no time left for the work that matters. When someone complains about meetings, they're often signaling that their schedule leaves no room for the work they find meaningful. Next time you hear this complaint, ask them directly: "What would you do with an extra two hours this week?"
- Do one thing, fully. Finishing is a feeling your scattered days quietly stopped giving you. When your attention splits across ten things, nothing gets your full presence—and you miss the quiet satisfaction of actually completing something. Pick one small task tomorrow, give it your actual focus, and notice what that completion feels like.
- Ask of each app: does an alert from this really need to interrupt your life? For nearly all of them, the honest answer is no.Most notifications are designed to serve the app's interests, not yours—they want engagement, not your wellbeing. Try turning off notifications for one app today and notice how little you actually miss it.
- Recovery isn't the reward you earn after the work. It's part of the work — the part that keeps the rest of it good. Most people treat rest like they're stealing time from productivity, when really it's the opposite—without it, everything falls apart faster. Try one thing this week: when you feel the urge to push harder, pause and ask yourself what would actually serve tomorrow better.
- It was never discipline carrying you. It was energy — and energy is made in your body, not your calendar.Your body runs on signals from movement, food, and rest—not from willpower or perfect schedules. Try this week: notice when you actually feel capable, then work backward to see what physical thing preceded it.
- Three slow breaths before you walk into a meeting. Small enough to feel silly — and you can try it today. You don't need a long meditation to arrive differently — three slow breaths at the door are enough to try. Before your next meeting, breathe in slowly and out more slowly, three times, and notice how you walk in.
- Busy is not the same as effective. The faster you run, the less you actually steer. Most people confuse motion with progress—they're grinding through their day but haven't decided what actually matters. Try this: pick one thing you want different in three months, then protect two hours weekly for just that, and notice what starts to move.
- Calm isn't a temperament you're born with. It's a skill: the half-second of space between a trigger and your reaction. That half-second gap is where you actually get to choose—not just react on autopilot. Start noticing it by pausing before you respond to one frustration today, even if it's just three deep breaths.
- Purpose isn't buried treasure you dig up. It's a direction you face — and you mostly discover it by moving. Most people wait for clarity before they move, but clarity usually comes from taking small steps in a direction that matters to you. Pick one thing you could do this week—however modest—that aligns with what you care about, and notice what you learn.
- A strong enough "why" makes almost any "how" bearable. Get clear on the why behind what you already do.When you understand why you're doing something—not the surface reason, but the real one—the hard parts become tolerable because they matter. Spend fifteen minutes this week writing down one thing you do regularly and why it actually matters to you, not why you think it should.
- Begin your second curve while the first is still going well. Waiting turns a graceful change of course into an emergency. When you're still succeeding, you have the freedom to experiment and learn from small failures before they matter. This week, spend 30 minutes exploring one skill or direction that intrigues you, just to see what you might discover.
- You don't think your way into a new self-image. You act your way in — one delegated task, one declined meeting at a time.Every time you say no to something that doesn't fit who you want to become, you're adding evidence for what that person actually does. Pick one small thing this week—maybe it's leaving a meeting early or delegating a task you usually hoard—and notice how it shifts what feels normal.
- A thing depreciates; a memory compounds. Spend on experiences you'll replay for years, not objects that fade. The best purchases aren't things—they're moments that reshape how you see yourself and the world. This week, pick one small experience over one small purchase: a class, a walk somewhere new, coffee with someone you've been meaning to see.
- Name your "enough" number. Most people never do — so no amount ever feels like enough. The reason many people feel short at any income level is they never decide when they've won—so the goalpost keeps moving. Pick a number that would genuinely change your life, write it down, and commit to pausing once you reach it.
- Financial freedom isn't being rich. It's working because you want to, not because you have to.Most people chase a number instead of asking what they'd do without the paycheck pressure. Start small: pick one expense this month you'd cut if you truly didn't need the income, and notice how that feels.
- The urgent is loud; the important is quiet. So the important waits — unless you protect it on purpose, in advance. Most days, the crisis in front of you will devour the time meant for what matters most — your health, your relationships, your actual goals. The fix is unglamorous: block the time on your calendar now, before anything urgent arrives to steal it.
- You don't have to be everywhere. Stepping back from a meeting can be the most focused thing you do all week. When you skip something, you're not being lazy—you're being intentional about where your energy goes. Try declining just one meeting this week and notice what you actually accomplish with that time back.
- A not-to-do list beats a to-do list. One only adds; the other gives you back your week. Most of us know what we should stop doing but never write it down. Pick one thing this week—checking email after 6pm, saying yes to meetings you dread, scrolling before bed—and actually remove it. Notice what comes back when you do.
- Multitasking is just fast switching, and every switch leaves a residue. One thing at a time isn't slower. It's sharper. When you switch tasks, part of your attention stays on the last one, and that leftover is where errors breed and focus thins. Try protecting just one hour today where you close everything else and work on a single thing that matters.
- Work expands to fill the time you give it. Cap the container, and the value usually holds — only the stress leaves. When you cap the time a task gets, the value usually holds and only the padding goes. Try setting a firm stop time for one project this week and notice what shifts.
- Roughly a fifth of your effort drives most of your results. Find that fifth, protect it, and shrink the rest. Most people scatter their energy across everything equally, then wonder why nothing moves. The nudge: this week, list your last ten wins—where did they actually come from?—then do more of that, less of everything else.
- Making the wrong thing faster still leaves you doing the wrong thing. Cut it, and you get your afternoon back. The speed of execution means nothing if the direction is wrong—you're just getting lost faster. Pick one thing today that feels obligatory rather than necessary, and notice what actually happens when you stop doing it.
- Meddling spends your experience one problem at a time. Mentoring invests it, so it keeps paying out for years. When you fix someone's immediate crisis, they're dependent on your next rescue. When you help them build the skill to handle it themselves, you've freed up both your time and theirs. This week, pick one person you're helping and ask yourself whether you are solving this, or teaching them to solve it.
- "Good job" proves you needed something to say. Specific praise proves you actually noticed — that's the whole point. When you name what someone actually did—"you caught that error before it reached the client" instead of "nice work"—they know you were paying attention, not just being nice. Try it today: pick one thing you notice and say exactly what you saw.
- In a heated moment, one breath hands control back from your brain's alarm to its reasoning. Pause before you speak. When you feel heat rising, speaking from that state usually creates more problems than it solves. Next time tension flares, pause for five seconds before responding, and give the thinking part of you a chance to catch up.
- Every automatic yes is a no to something you never chose — usually the deep work, the rest, or the people who matter most. When you say yes to everything, you're operating on someone else's schedule and priorities, not your own. This week, try declining one request that doesn't align with what actually matters to you—not rudely, just clearly—and notice what space opens up.
- Hear the need behind the words. "Too many meetings" often means: no time left for the work that matters. When someone complains about meetings, they're usually telling you their real work is getting squeezed out. Try asking one person this week: "What's one thing you'd do if you had an extra two hours?" Then actually protect that time for them.
- Do one thing, fully. Finishing is a feeling your scattered days quietly stopped giving you. When you complete something small—a task, a conversation, a meal—you get a feeling scattered days rarely give. Try finishing one thing today before starting another, and notice how that closure actually feels.
- Ask of each app: does an alert from this really need to interrupt your life? For nearly all of them, the honest answer is no.Most notifications are not urgent, and their defaults were never set with your day in mind. Try turning off notifications for one app this week and notice what you actually miss.
- Recovery isn't the reward you earn after the work. It's part of the work — the part that keeps the rest of it good. Most people treat rest like something they'll do when everything else is done, but that never happens. Try blocking one evening this week where you're not available—no phone, no planning, just stopping—and notice how the next day's work actually feels different.
- It was never discipline carrying you. It was energy — and energy is made in your body, not your calendar.Your body's state—whether you're fed, rested, moving, or tense—directly shapes what you can actually do that day, not your to-do list. Try noticing one small thing tomorrow: eat something real before your hardest task, and watch what shifts.
- Three slow breaths before you walk into a meeting. Small enough to feel silly — and you can try it today.Three breaths before a meeting are a transition ritual, not a trick: a few seconds to close the door on the last room so you arrive in this one, clear enough to ask what the room actually needs from you.
- Busy is not the same as effective. The faster you run, the less you actually steer. When you're moving at full speed, you're often just reacting to whatever's loudest—not choosing what matters. Pick one thing this week to do slower, and notice what you actually decide instead of just responding.
- Calm isn't a temperament you're born with. It's a skill: the half-second of space between a trigger and your reaction. That half-second is where your choice lives—not in the trigger itself, but in what you do with it. Try this today: when something frustrates you, pause long enough to take one slow breath before you respond, and notice what shifts.
- Purpose isn't buried treasure you dig up. It's a direction you face — and you mostly discover it by moving. You learn what matters to you by actually doing things, not by thinking about them endlessly. This week, pick one small action—volunteer, try a skill, help someone—and notice what it brings up in you.
- A strong enough "why" makes almost any "how" bearable. Get clear on the why behind what you already do.When you understand why you're doing something—not the surface reason, but the real one—the daily friction drops away. Spend ten minutes this week writing down what you're actually trying to accomplish with one thing you do regularly, then notice what shifts.
- Status is a firework: bright, loud, gone. Impact is a campfire: quieter, warmer, and it lasts through the night. When you chase the next achievement or approval, the rush fades fast—but the people you actually help remember. This week, pick one person or project where you can show up consistently, even in small ways, and notice how differently that feels than winning something once.
- You don't have to climb down the ladder. You just have to move it to a better wall. The insight here is that you don't need to overhaul your entire life—you just need to redirect your effort toward something that matters more to you. This week, pick one activity you do regularly and ask yourself honestly if it's building toward what you actually want, then consider swapping it for something that does.
- Sort your tasks by two questions: does this give energy, and does it matter? What drains you and means little — drop it, without guilt. Most people spend energy on things that don't align with what matters to them, then wonder why they feel hollow. Start this week by listing three tasks you do regularly, then honestly rate each one—does it energize or deplete you, and does the outcome genuinely matter to your life?
- That quiet "was that it?" isn't a crisis. It's your own life asking you to choose again. When the initial excitement fades and you're left with just ordinary life, that's not failure—it's the moment you discover what actually matters to you versus what you thought should matter. Try naming one small thing today that you'd choose again if no one was watching.
- You're not past your peak — you're between curvesMidlife restlessness usually isn't decline. It's the quiet end of one curve and the start of another. A calmer way to read the feeling — and a small first step you can take this week.
